Grief can come in many forms. Traditionally people would be recommended to see a grief counsellor only upon the death of a loved one. 

Grief, however, can be experienced for many different reasons. People who are diagnosed with autoimmune or other debilitating conditions can grieve the person they were.

People grieve loss of relationships, be it a romantic separation or the cut off of a family member or long term friendship. 

In our modern society, people use social media as a weapon, cutting people off from their lives and people can grieve the loss of online communities. 

In a world where transitioning from one gender to another, we have family systems who are adjusting to a literal physical and psychosocial change. 

Narcissistic abuse can cause grief and loss of a relationship that was an illusion. 

Grief is a very real and valid emotion for lots of situations and here at Free Your Mind Therapy, we have helped many clients through the grieving process, a very important process to go through in order to become free.

Here at Free Your Mind Therapy, we are the leaders in helping to navigate the effects of Cultural Conditioning on your life. 

What is cultural conditioning? It is the residual and often quite damaging effects of the conditioning you have experienced growing up that can keep you in a rut, trauma bonded to toxic family members or family systems. 

We work with many, many clients who come to us with childhood trauma (as lots of people have), however for some their specific cultural norms play a huge role in specific trauma reactions that can go completely unacknowledged or not taken into consideration in traditional therapy. We have found that once these are acknowledged and strategies put in place to heal, our clients feel the freedom that comes from letting go of toxic belief systems and behaviours. 


Cultural Conditioning can be things like:


  • cultural superstitions, 
  • place in the family system (if you are the wife, husband, child, birth place, if you are adopted, birth order), 
  • gender, 
  • propensity to question or conform, 
  • norms specific to that culture or family system that condone abuse and mask it as discipline, 
  • modelling unhealthy parental relationships, 
  • dysfunctional communication,
  • extreme parenting (black/white thinking, arranged or forced marriages, honour based punishments or rules),
  • physical abuse or mental torture,
  • narcissistic parents/siblings,
  • justification cycle,
  • secret keeping,
  • living with unpredictable consequences for actions.


these are just some of the cultural conditioning that can all play a huge role in shaping people's lives, keeping them making decisions that are best for a toxic family system rather than living their best life for themselves. 

This is especially pertinent for those that are children of parents who migrated to another country and are living in a family system that does not reflect the cultural norms of the country of origin of the child.
